A few months ago, I posted my thoughts on whether craft kits were creative. I lamented the fact that a cross stitch kit I bought left no freedom for creativity.
After I swore off craft kits forever, however, I did come across one that caught my eye. It’s not exactly a kit. It’s an art set, that comes with a suggestion of what to make with it.
It’s one of the Staedtler Easy Watercolour Sets. Although the shop I bought it from had only one option (Birds), it looks like there are (at least) three variations: Flower, Birds, and Butterfly.
Each set includes a fineliner, a small brush, a watercolour-paper bookmark, and three double-ended watercolour brush pens — in different combinations of colours depending on the theme of the set. It doesn’t really include any instructions, except for the suggested three steps on the front that show how the cute drawing on the pack was made.
Given my newfound artistic freedom, what did I do? Yes, of course, I grabbed the included blank bookmark, and recreated this art that had drawn me to the set in the first place.
Copying the drawing gave me a pretty good idea of how to use the materials. And now, I have those pens and brush to make anything I like.
In my books, that’s a pretty creative craft kit.
