Summer/winter

A quick diary comic I made for an hour-long comics-making session with K. Woodman-Maynard. The prompt was “summer.”

A four-panel comic title "Summer/Winter." The first panel has a drawing of the Earth, with Australia at the top. There's a small person standing on Australia, waving and saying "hi!" The caption says: "I grew up in the Southern Hemisphere of a Northern Hemisphere-centric world." The second panel has interlinking thought balloons. In one the person is dressed in woollen clothes and is freezing. They are thinking about the other thought balloon, which is a person sweating in the summer heat, who is thinking about the person in winter. The caption says: "Always thinking of summer in winter, and winter in summer." The third panel has a hand switching a lightswitch. On the top of the light switch is says "Winter" and the bottom, "Summer." The caption says "Travel is always an exciting seasonal reversal..." The fourth panel shows the Earth again, this time in the standard orientation with Australia at the bottom. The planet is encircled by a dotted line and two aeroplanes. Next to each aeroplane is the word "Weee!" The caption says: "...and a complete delight!"

This was my second time joining K’s comics-making session (here’s my comic from the first session).

Unfortunately, for this session I needed to be in the car driving for the first half an hour. Even though I knew it would be impossible to draw anything, I thought I could at least listen to the prompt and think of ideas.

As I was driving home, I was writing the comic in my head. It suddenly occured to me that comics making has become a fluid process for me, where I think of the words and the images simultaneously. Once I got home, it all came tumbling out together in a satisfying flow of ink and watercolour.

Thanks to K. Woodman-Maynard for running a fun session!
