The joy of swatching colours

Creating a colour chart with new art materials is one of the joys of being an artist.

One of the best things about stockpiling new art supplies?

Swatching colours.

I recently bought a set of alcohol ink markers from Kmart (cheap but well-reviewed).

The first thing I did with the markers was to create a colour chart. I drew a grid on paper on which I could sample each colour, for future reference when creating art.

Markers, inks, and paints often look very different on paper than they do on the cap, bottle, or in the pan. Colour charts are an essential way to have the accurate colours on hand.

But what I love most about swatching colours is that I get to use all the materials I’ve just bought. This gives me the joy of making marks on the page, and breaks them in. By using them, even just a tiny bit, I no longer feel that they are too precious to use.
