Why I didn’t do Hourly Comics Day

Hourly Comics Day is a fun idea in theory. But what if my day is 32-hours long, and seriously boring?

A four-panel comic depicting Hourly Comics Day. In the first panel, I realise the day is coming up. The second panel shows a calendar, and describes how I will actually be travelling for the whole day. In the third panel, I show an attempt to record every hour of sitting on a plane. Then in the final panel, I close my iPad, giving up.

Last year on February 1, I learned about Hourly Comics Day. On this day, comic artists are invited to draw a comic every hour — a diary, of sorts.

I excitedly added a reminder for Feb 1, 2026, so I could participate next time.

However, when the reminder popped up, I realised I would be flying across time zones that day, making my day 32 hours long, spent mostly in airports and on planes.

How boring.

I tried anyway, drawing some little comics every hour. But as the day went on, I realised that I didn’t have anything very exciting to share, and there are only so many ways I can draw the experience of hurtling through the sky in a metal tube.

So, I gave up. But at least I have this comic to show for the process.

(After I drew this, I learned that Hourly Comics Day actually shifted to February 8th this year. Oops!)
