In August, I was in Phoenix, Arizona for WordCamp US. I was excited to visit for WordCamp and to get a glimpse of the city’s essence. I knew my time would be limited, so I did some research before the trip to decide on one place I wanted to visit.
That place was the Desert Botanical Garden, which I took a Waymo to get to (so fun!). I love the shapes, colours, and textures of desert plants, so this seemed like a good moment to brave the 42°C heat at sunset.





I’m still working on my sketching skills, and as much as I wanted to do more sketching on location, the extraordinary heat meant I had to settle for photographing and sketching back in air conditioning. Besides, it’s hard to sketch when you have a margarita in your hand!
I loved the challenge of capturing the colours and shapes of desert plants. I noticed so many details when sketching them that I hadn’t taken the time to see in person. I know my sketches aren’t perfect, but I’m learning with each one.
