I used to feel despondent at my lack of mastery of any one thing. All around me, I saw artists, musicians, scientists, dancers, and mathematicians who were so much better at their chosen domain than I could ever be.
I have a habit of learning new things, then stopping once my curiosity is satisfied. Once I feel good enough.
A conversation with my cousin helped me see this conundrum from a new angle. “The thing you’re good at,” she said, “is being able to do lots of things.”
This simple sentence has stuck with me ever since. It’s encouraged me to keep trying new things, and not to feel bad if I decide to move on to something else. So now, I embrace it!
